AACC National Calls to Action

We call people to the following:

  1. See that Asian American churches are a vibrant part of the American fabric. Though we are far from perfect, our churches have often been one of the most significant forces in the preservation of our Asian ethnic identities, cultures, and values.

At the same time, we call our own churches (and non-Asian American churches) to engage in race- and gender-conscious discipleship, and embrace the teaching and work of Jesus Christ, by actively combating anti-Asian racism from the pulpit, in congregational life, and in the world.  We call the church to tear down the idols of nationalism, misogyny, and xenophobia in the church.

  2. Increase awareness and education on issues impacting Asian Americans, including: anti-Asian bias, the exotification and hyper-sexualization of Asian women, and Asian American histories of oppression and resistance.

  3. Invite, empower, and equip Asian American female and male leaders in the church and in non-Christian organizations who understand the complexities of U.S. racism to speak into the ways ministries, organizations, and institutions can respond to anti-Asian racism and more specifically, the sexualized racism against women of Asian heritage.

  4. Provide culturally-competent mental health services and resources for Asian American youth and their families in all public schools and agencies.

  5. Stop minimizing anti-Asian racism.

Seek to understand the ways that the model minority myth pits the Asian American community against other communities of color in ways that discourage solidarity among them. This harmful myth perpetuates the false notion that racial inequities and barriers can be overcome at the individual rather than systemic level, discounts the harm that our communities face, and minimizes the needs of our community when they emerge.

Seek to also understand the ways the perpetual foreigner stereotype casts Asian Americans as a racial problem and perilous other in ways that have led to insidious racial microaggressions and brazen forms of anti-Asian violence.

  6. Support Asian American businesses and enterprises that have been and still are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 as well as Asian-Americans in the workplace who are unfairly targeted and discriminated against.

  7. Hold elected officials accountable for their words and inaction. Let them know that unkept promises will not be tolerated. Pray that they would heed their responsibility to protect the vulnerable from violence and oppression, and pursue justice and peace for the sake of the common good.
