a portrait of asian american christianity

A Portrait of Asian American Christianity is a series of reports looking at trends within the Asian American church based on research conducted by experts in the field. These reports serve as a jumping off point for churches, nonprofits, and individuals to begin having conversations on the state of Asian American Christianity.

The hope of these reports is to raise awareness and to give leaders a greater understanding of what Asian American Christians might be experiencing to embolden them to respond to their needs with courage for the sake of the Kingdom of God. There are four major reports within A Portrait of Asian American Christianity highlighting different areas of Asian American Christianity:

  • Report 1 looks at the broad demographic characteristics of Asian American Christianity. This report will give a general overview of the shape of Asian American Christianity with its unique contours that give light to the reports to follow. These demographic characteristics include: the general distribution of Christianity among Asian Americans, religious distribution among Asian Americans, age group distribution, ethnic distribution, educational distribution, average household income, regional distribution, and nativity distribution (immigrant, 2nd/1.5 gen, 3rd gen).

  • Report 2 zooms in on the particular characteristics of religious life and religious belief and practice among Asian Americans. This report gives a picture of what Asian Americans think about religion and what their religious persuasions might look like. This includes religious affiliation, religious salience (how important is religion in your life?) religious beliefs, church attendance, racial composition of churches, and study done on the so called “silent exodus” (2nd generation immigrants who are leaving the church).

  • Report 3 looks at how involved Asian American Christians are in American politics. In particular, this report looks at how the issue of race plays a role in the political engagement of Asian American Christians. This report includes research on perceptions of stereotypes about Asians, views of affirmative action policies, racial bias in law enforcement, race perceptions towards non-Asians, and Christian nationalism.

  • Report 4 looks at the racial experiences and attitudes on race and policy. It looks more particularly at attitudes towards race as it relates to public policy. Findings in this report include attitudes towards, individual discrimination, racial justice participation, and attitudes on race and policy.

The State of Youth MinistrY in Asian American Churches Today

AACC is excited to republish this research report by Eunice Hong, Wheaton College, and Jinna Si Lo Jin, Fuller Theological Seminary, about the state of youth ministry in Asian American churches today.

“Despite growing concern about youth disengagement from Christianity and the Christian church (Pew Research Center, 2025), strategies specifically tailored to engage Asian American youth remain underresearched. Drawing from interviews with 16 senior pastors and youth leaders across North America, this paper presents key findings on current ministry practices, with implications of emerging approaches to foster deeper youth engagement in Asian American church contexts.”
